Names of God

Proverbs 18:10 tells us that "The Name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous runs into it and is safe." This is a promise for us to live by. We can call upon the name of the Lord and trust in who He says He is. No matter what situation we find ourselves in, God's character never changes. God's name represents His attributes, His nature, and His character. Each name is a statement of who He is. Isaiah 6:3 says that the whole earth is full of God's glory and the heavens constantly declare it (Psalm 19:1). In other words, God's glory is any way in which He makes Himself recognizable. God makes Himself known all throughout the bible by displaying another facet of His character. That is why we want to focus on some of the names of God... to help us better recognize God in our midst. Let's learn to recognize and worship God for who He is!

Maker-Elohim

The first time we encounter God in the bible is as Creator or Elohim in Hebrew. In Genesis 1:1,26 we see that God created the heavens and the earth, the galaxies and blazing stars... and then God [Elohim] said, "Let Us make man in Our image." Wow, what an incredible thought... us made in His image! The bible also says that He fearfully and wonderfully made us, that we are unique and made specifically by Him (Psalm 139:13-15). Have you ever wondered why you were created? Have you ever been unsatisfied with the way you look or displeased with a unique feature you have? Then consider Isaiah 43:7 which says, "Everyone who is called by My name, whom I have created for My glory; I have formed him, yes, I have made him." It is for His glory and His pleasure alone that you were created! Take a moment and ask Elohim, your Creator if you are fulfilling the purpose of your creation. Are you displaying God’s glory, His character, His likeness to the world around you? Spend time with Him and get to know God as your Creator. Ask God to help you to be confident in Him as Elohim, the one that fearfully and wonderfully made you!
